No Double Dipping on Homestead Exemption

Q. I just received my Homestead Exemption renewal. I bought a home in Nov but will keep my current home for my mom. Can I keep both exemptions?

A. No, you can only claim homestead exemption on one primary, owner occupied residence. However if you deed your home to your mom, then she can claim the exemption for herself where she may be eligible for additional exemptions such as those for widows, the disabled, etc. Unfortunately some owners fraudulently claim exemptions for more than one home such as in the case of rental properties or second homes. Florida law is clear – it is your responsibility to notify the Property Appraiser’s office if the home is no longer eligible for the exemption. Failure to do so can result in severe consequences including back taxes, penalties, and liens. And as a reminder to all our readers who bought a primary residence in 2017, the deadline to file for homestead exemption is March 1, 2018. You can file online at
